Food From Home

Cooking at home for fun, health and frugality!

About Me

IMG_0010.PNGI am 41 years old  and I have been married for 16 years. I love to cook and read. I’m not so good about keeping up things like blogs but I’ll try.

In the last few years we’ve been moving away from  using convenience foods or eating out so often for health and financial reasons. My husband (Hagbard) and I like trying new things so I’m always looking for ideas. Our teenage daughter (formerly Little Lulu, now Amethesto) can be a bit of a picky eater so I do a happy dance when everyone likes something I make. 🙂

One of the first things I learned to cook was popcorn in a pan on the stove. Too bad the hot pan was so heavy that I put it down on the vinyl seat of a kitchen chair- very noticeable. (Yes, I was cooking without adult permission/supervision at a young age. )  In junior high and high school I took all the home economics classes. I got my first real cookbook when I was 13 years old. My mom started working outside the home while I was in high school and I began cooking for my family regularly.  I loved baking and decorating cakes the most. My family will remember the cake completely covered in rock hard blue icing (Discworld book fans should just think of dwarf bread). Very comical scene of all of us trying to break  the cake open.  I did not do it on purpose although I suppose it would make a good prank cake. I’ve gotten much better at cooking over the years. I hardly ever maim the furniture and no one has had to beat at a cake I’ve made just to get a slice for years!

When my daughter was about 5 years old we moved to a rural area.  Things like pita bread became exotic and elusive locally.  Restaurant & store choices became very limited. We still wanted to eat things like gyros though so I’ve learned to cook lots of things from scratch while keeping costs down. I’ve learned about meal planning and shopping less often or using what we have on hand.

These days we are located in a small town and have a few more food options.  I plan dinners for a month at a time.  We do eat meat but also eat meatless meals frequently.  I’m allergic to pineapple but we have no other food allergies or restrictions for our family.

My motivation for starting this blog is to share the fun I have with food.
